History of the Calendar:
Brief History of the Gregorian Calendar
🔹 Origin:
- Julian Calendar, introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BCE, calculated the year as 365.25 days long.
- Every 4th year was a leap year, adding one extra day in February.
🔹 Problem with Julian Calendar:
- The actual solar year (time Earth takes to orbit the Sun) is approximately 365.2422 days, not 365.25.
- This small discrepancy (about 11 minutes/year) caused a drift of 1 day every 128 years.
- By the 16th century, the calendar was 10 days out of alignment with the equinox.
🔹 Gregorian Reform:
- Introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 via a papal decree called Inter gravissimas.
- The goal: realign the calendar with the spring equinox and maintain synchronization with the seasons.
🔹 Key Changes:
- Leap Year Rule Adjusted:
- A year is a leap year if divisible by 4.
- Exception: If divisible by 100, it is not a leap year unless also divisible by 400.
- Example: 1600 and 2000 are leap years, but 1700, 1800, and 1900 are not.
- 10 Days Dropped:
- To realign with the equinox, Thursday, October 4, 1582 was followed by Friday, October 15, 1582.
🔹 Adoption Worldwide:
- Catholic countries (Spain, Italy, Portugal, Poland) adopted it immediately in 1582.
- Protestant and Orthodox countries resisted at first:
- Britain and its colonies switched in 1752 (11 days dropped).
- Russia adopted it after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution.
- Greece adopted it in 1923.
📅 Significance Today:
It remains highly accurate with a deviation of only 1 day every ~3,030 years.
The Gregorian calendar is the international civil calendar.
This calculator is mainly geared towards World Holidays.
Holidays, but holidays specific to a given country can be entered manually.
Certain holidays can also be excluded.
For a further level of specificity, federal holidays in the U.S.
Refer to holidays that have been recognized by the U.S.
Government; on these days, non-essential federal government offices are closed, and all federal employees receive paid leave.
This is not necessarily true in the private sector, however, and which federal holidays a private sector employee receives is largely dependent on the discretion of the company.
